Exploring resonance with Khaita Joyful Dances

Dance Resonance – Artistic Attunement in Motion
Symposium of the Society for Dance Research, Vienna, Austria, 27 September 2025

In the workshop, Eva introduced to the participants of the conference the singing and dance practice of Khaita – Joyful Dances and explored its connection to Hartmut Rosa’s concept of resonance.

Designed as an inclusive, experiential session open to all participants, the workshop integrated theoretical insights with practical movement exercises, with the aim of offering a holistic engagement with Khaita as both an artistic practice and an academic inquiry.

On video bellow Eva explains the idea of resonance and its interconnection with Khaita Joyful Dances.

An excert from the Special edition of Khaita Forever for Worlds Rivers Day.

“Initiated by the Tibetan Buddhist master Namkhai Norbu in 2011, Khaita has since developed into a transcultural and translocal practice. The Khaita repertoire includes approximately 400 modern Tibetan pop songs and around 240 dances.

A prominent theme across many Khaita songs is the interdependence between the individual and the environment. Many songs integrate elements of Tibetan medicine (based on the harmony of elements), astrology, and environmental awareness. The lyrics reflect an ecological sensibility and can be interpreted as a poetic call to environmental consciousness and protection.

The name Khaita, translated from Tibetan as Harmony in Space, suggests a form of resonance that includes both internal and external dimensions. This harmony manifests not only as a relational awareness and openness toward the non-human world but also as a subjective state of relaxation and joyful presence experienced during dancing and singing.”
